Thornaby Chess Club Junior Policy

In chess, junior players are defined as under 18's. Many of our young library players go on to play at the club and we undoubtedly have the best junior section in the area. One of our juniors is the current Teesside champion for under 18's and we are the only club in the Cleveland league with teams dedicated to junior players.

The club policy is that junior players attending the club should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. The level of play in a chess club environment is very high compared to what children would be used to in school or elsewhere and a certain level of maturity is also needed. For this reason, junior players aged under 11 can attend the club by invite only and should first attend one of our 2 library sessions that are usually more suitable for this age group. Junior players aged 11 or over are welcome to join the club directly, but we would still recommend the library route first. Details of our 2 library sessions are below:


Members of our club support the weekly Saturday morning free "Chess for All" sessions at Thornaby Library from 10am-12pm (September to May) which are primarily aimed at junior players. The library address is:
